Bio:
Sebastian Bauer is an engineer by training, and most of his career has focused on computational imaging and transforming new imaging research into useful applications in real systems. He completed his PhD at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology working on hyperspectral imaging, then joined the University of Wisconsin–Madison as a postdoc, where he worked on problems including seeing around corners and fluorescence lifetime imaging.
That work increasingly brought him into single-photon imaging just as higher-resolution SPAD sensors were becoming practical outside the lab. He could see that these sensors were capturing incredibly rich information about light in scenarios that challenged conventional sensors, but there was still a big gap between collecting that data and turning it into something a machine could actually use in real time. Ubicept was founded out of research conducted at UW–Madison and MIT to solve that problem.
