Integrating IoT Optical Sensors for Real-Time Fault Localization in Passive Networks using Wireless Technology

Thu, May 7 | 02:30 PM - 02:55 PM

Session details:

This presentation introduces a paradigm shift in network assurance in Smart Cities, tackling the critical technical challenge that 70% of network issues originate in the passive optical network. Conventional monitoring provides limited visibility in this segment, resulting in high operational costs and lengthy repair times.

We present a novel hybrid sensor approach for Passive Network Assurance. This concept integrates dedicated optical IoT sensors (measuring optical power, luminosity, and movement) communicating via LoRaWAN or NB-IoT, with intelligent correlation logic and also ONU as a Sensor. This combination delivers highly assertive and instantaneous fault localization (georeferenced), providing the key insight missing in traditional network management systems.

We offer an in-depth analysis of how this solution fundamentally reshapes market responses to network resilience and security. Real-world examples demonstrate the technology's effectiveness in solving complex challenges, including the growing industry problem of network vandalism/theft. Users have achieved up to 68% reduction in trouble tickets and up to 60% reduction in Mean Time to Repair (MTTR). Furthermore, real-time sensing capabilities reduce network vandalism cases by up to 75%. This talk provides technical and business insights into designing resilient networks for the future of Smart Cities.
