Cost-efficient isolated data link for real-time high-res image sensors in invasive medical devices
Session details:
The integration of high-resolution CMOS image sensors in surgical tools is transforming medical imaging, enabling multi-stream 4K visualization for minimally invasive procedures and AI-assisted diagnostics. A key challenge is achieving high-bandwidth, electrically isolated data transmission between camera and processor while ensuring protection for both patient and operator. This session presents two novel solutions for isolating the MIPI CSI-2 camera interface using Analog Devices’ iCoupler® and GMSL technologies to achieve safe and robust data transfer. One approach uses LVDS-based digital isolators with a reconfigurable FPGA for flexible protocol isolation; the other uses a compact bridge IC suitable for space-constrained designs. These solutions overcome the lack of off-the-shelf MIPI CSI-2 isolation, simplify cabling, and enhance safety and performance in medical, industrial and aerospace applications.
